Facing Mortality on A Good Goodbye TV

Facing Mortality on A Good Goodbye TV

Fr. Arturo OlivasIf you were given only a few months to live, what would you do? We wrap up the interviews on A Good Goodbye TV with a special guest who is facing his own mortality.

Arturo Francisco Olivas is a santero artist, a Franciscan Brother and a cancer survivor who has outlived the initial prognosis he was given for terminal lung cancer.

On September 16, 2011, he was hospitalized after numerous visits to his primary care physician for what seemed to be an extended bout of pneumonia. After tests confirmed that he had lung cancer, he was given eight to 12 months to live.

Medical treatments of steroids, radiation, and a targeted chemotherapy regimen with a new drug designed for his type of lung cancer began immediately. Only 10% of the people who receive this new chemotherapy treatment respond well to the drug, and he is in that minority. When this interview was recorded in March 2013, Fr. Arturo had been living with the cancer for 18 months.

Among the topics discussed:

Preparing for death by living fully and deeplyHow his faith as a Franciscan informs his spiritualityWhat he is doing to prepare for his final arrangementsThe positive aspects of skull imagery and Dia de los MuertosTalking with children about death as a part of lifeMaking artwork and saying goodbye

This longer interview has been edited into two separate programs which start airing on July 2 for the first part and July 9 for the second part.

A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die is currently airing on Albuquerque’s Comcast cable system on the uPUBLIC.tv Channels 26 and 27. Each episode is scheduled as follows:

A Good Goodbye TV is an educational and entertaining 12-episode series of 30-minute programs with expert interviews on “everything you need to know before you go.”

Host Gail Rubin brings a light touch to a serious subject. Like her award-winning book, A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die, the television program covers information most people don’t know about until faced with a death in the family.

Starting the Conversation on A Good Goodbye Radio

Starting the Conversation on A Good Goodbye Radio

AGG Radio Show Banner

A Good Goodbye Radio is launching Wednesday May 1, starting the conversation on end-of-life issues with Martha Hayward of The Conversation Project. This Internet radio program covers a wide range of critical information most people don’t consider until there’s a death in the family.

Why it’s important to have an end-of-life conversation:

60% of people say that making sure their family is not burdened by tough decisions is “extremely important”

56% have not communicated their end-of-life wishes

One conversation can make all the difference.

The Conversation Project is dedicated to helping people talk about their wishes for end-of-life care. Too many people are dying in a way they wouldn’t choose, and too many of their loved ones are left feeling bereaved, guilty, and uncertain.

“It’s time to transform our culture so we shift from not talking about dying to talking about it. It’s time to share the way we want to live at the end of our lives. And it’s time to communicate about the kind of care we want and don’t want for ourselves,” says Hayward.

“We believe that the place for this to begin is at the kitchen table—not in the intensive care unit—with the people we love, before it’s too late.”

Martha Hayward with The Conversation ProjectMartha Hayward joined the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) in March 2011 as the Lead for Public and Patient Engagement. A cancer survivor, she is a founding board member of the non-profit Women’s Health Exchange and served on the Patient and Family Advisory Council of Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.

Most recently, as Executive Director at The Partnership for Healthcare Excellence, Hayward brought a particular focus on, and considerable experience in, the area of patient advocacy.

Find out more about The Conversation Project and download your free conversation starter kit from their website: www.TheConversationProject.org.

A Good Goodbye Radio is presented live on Wednesdays at 6:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. CT / 4:00 p.m. MT / 3:00 p.m. PT on the Rock Star Radio Network. Each program is available in podcast form within 30 minutes of the live program.

Mark your calendars and call in toll-free during the live program to 866-404-6519.

Other guests scheduled for the month of May are: Erika Dillman, author of The Party of Your Life (5/8); Brian Flowers, president of the Green Burial Council (5/15); Valere Beck with MedCure.org on whole body donation (5/22); and Coleen Ellis, co-chair of the Pet Loss Professionals Alliance (5/29).

A Good Goodbye Radio is hosted and produced by Gail Rubin, The Doyenne of Death®. She is the author of the award-winning book A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die, a Certified Funeral Celebrant, and an engaging speaker who uses funny films to help bring people to consider a topic most would rather avoid.

She brings a light touch to a serious subject and presents expert interviews on “everything you need to know before you go.” More information is available at www.AGoodGoodbye.com.

Green Burial and Eco-Friendly Funerals: Episode 4 of A Good Goodbye TV

Green Burial and Eco-Friendly Funerals: Episode 4 of A Good Goodbye TV

Darren Crouch on AGG

Want to “go green” with your funeral or cremation?

Episode Four of A Good Goodbye TV looks at green burial and eco-friendly funerals. While most people associate green only with living, green funerals and green burials provide a way to make end-of-life more meaningful. The discussion includes cremation scattering, funeral resource use and ways to reduce environmental impact.

The guest for this program is Darren Crouch, president of Passages International, which also sponsors the educational website AGreenerFuneral.org. The website introduces the reader to the full spectrum of greener practices one might consider when planning a funeral.

A Good Goodbye host Gail Rubin was interviewed on The Morning Brew program about the debut of A Good Goodbye TV on Albuquerque’s uPUBLIC.tv. Here’s a YouTube video of that interview:

Announcing A Good Goodbye TV

Announcing A Good Goodbye TV Funeral Planning TV Shows Talking About Funerals “Won’t Make You Dead”

A Good Goodbye color logoAlbuquerque, NM (January 9, 2013) — Funeral planning television is coming to a screen near you. A Good Goodbye TV, an educational and entertaining 12-episode series of 30-minute programs, will present expert interviews on “everything you need to know before you go.”

Host Gail Rubin brings a light touch to a serious subject. Like her award-winning book, A Good Goodbye: Funeral Planning for Those Who Don’t Plan to Die, the television program will cover information most people don’t know about until faced with a death in the family.

“Talking about death and funeral planning issues on television enables individuals to discuss these topics with their families and take action,” explained Rubin, The Doyenne of Death® and a Certified Funeral Celebrant.

She added, “Each conversation will illustrate my motto: Talking about sex won’t make you pregnant, and talking about funerals won’t make you dead.”

By planning ahead and having a conversation, families can reduce stress at a time of grief, minimize family conflict, save money and create a meaningful, memorable “good goodbye.” Topics to be covered include funeral planning, cremation, cemeteries, green burial and eco-friendly funerals, life celebrations, pet loss, insurance, estate planning, reducing costs, end-of-life issues and much more.

The program will initially air on public access channels in Albuquerque (available in more than 100,000 homes) and along the Rio Grande corridor from Santa Fe to Las Cruces (690,000 households). The series will be offered nationally to 2,700 content-hungry public access channels across the U.S. Pay-per-view online downloads with 10-minute YouTube teasers and DVD sets grouped by topic will follow.

Ads incorporated in the initial 12 programs will enjoy exposure in all distribution channels. The series will debut with four fixed promotable time slots per week on Comcast Channel 26 and 27 in Albuquerque. Each program will have additional free repeats known as “freepeats.”  There will be at least one future season rerun.

Sponsor Host Producer L to R: Barbara Stewart, Susan Broersma and Tom Antram with FRENCH, Host Gail Rubin, and Producer Sean Wells

The anchor sponsor for the series is the FRENCH Family of Companies, including FRENCH Funerals-Cremations, FRENCH Advance Planning, Sunset Memorial Park, Best Friends Pet Services, Best Friends Forever Pet Cemetery and Cremation Society of New Mexico (CSNM).

FRENCH is the recipient of the National Funeral Directors Association’s 2012 Pursuit of Excellence® Award and a member of Selected Independent Funeral Homes.

A Good Goodbye TV offers a great avenue for appropriate companies to expand their consumer reach in a targeted way. The DVDs of the program can be used as an educational tool and in displays at trade shows.

“The interest that funeral homes, suppliers, and financial planners have shown in sponsoring the series is really encouraging. There’s really no TV show like this and as an advertising vehicle it targets interested consumers directly,” said Rubin.

The series producer is Sean Wells with Videotero, LLC. Filming will begin in February 2013. For details on sponsorship levels, visit http://agoodgoodbye.com/a-good-goodbye-tv-series/ to download more information.
